Race 7 Lane 13, "The One with More Drunks (like always)" (7/13/15)

Area: Sicuani    Comp: Cedeno

Hello everybody,

-We did service! We thought that we were going to build a floor for someone, but they told us to show up at 10:00 and when we did they had already finished that They then gave us the job of moving a pile of dirt from one location to another, 20 feet away. That proved to be a ton of fun.

-I gave a talk yesterday, but they didn't assign a topic so I just read a talk that I gave in Yunguyo. It was wonderful.

-We also had the musical number yesterday, but I've got a cold and can barely talk, so my singing voice sounded fantastic.

-A drunk wandered into the capilla and, in the words of Hermana Holland, was 'creeping' on the Hermanas. They called me and told me that he was trying to get them and they were trapped in the Primary room. When I got there, he was surprisingly creepy, but he just wanted to learn English from them. I still broke my own personal best time and got him outside the capilla in under 30 seconds.

-My pension does all that she can to make American food. This week, that included lasagna and pancakes, making this the best pension in the world.

Anyways, I'm not sure what else happened this week! We did lots of work, and accomplished lots of things! Have a great week!

Sincerely,
Elder Steele

Route 7 Campsite 6, "The One Where Things Start to Happen Again" Edition (7/6/15)

Hello everyone!

-HAPPY 4TH OF JULY! Elder Pearce and I woke up early and put on the national anthem and sung our lungs out. That was the only thing we actually did though.

-We live with the Zone Leaders! Which is a lot of fun and actually really convenient. And Elder Pearce (from my group, don't know how often I've mentioned him) got his transfer from Juliaca to here in Sicuani as the Zone leader!

-Elder Pearce and I arrived here on Thursday afternoon, and he had another transfer and yesterday he left and is in Puno. Elder Graham (from Canada) is now living with us as the Zone Leader.

-We live with our pension, who makes us 3 meals a day and makes some of the most delicious food I've had in a year. Score!

-I got to spend a couple days in Cusco! It was great. I spent time with a ton of my friends from my group, we went to the only Papa John's in the mission (and I ate a very big pizza by myself), we had trainings with President, and THEY GAVE US CELLPHONES! We were the only misson in Peru without cellphones, and I guess we still don't have cellphones for everyone, but I have one!

-Besides the Zone Leaders, and the missionaries around me are sisters, which is weird because the zone I've been in since December is an all-Elder zone.

-Elder Buehner (he has one transfer less than I do and we started in the same sector in Juliaca and lived together and everything) fell really far and broke his back. He'll be fine, but he's already had surgery and been sent home. He'll be in bed for months, and he potentially will be allowed to come back in December, so that's super sad.

-President Packer also died, so that's sad.

-A lady that none of the four of us has ever met died, and they asked us four Elders (my companion and I, and Elder Pearce with his companion) to be the pallbearers. We did that, and the plan was that I would dedicate the grave until the Stake Patriarch showed up and he did it.

Anyways, life's interesting here! It's back to being crazy every day and I love it. And we're working hard! Have a great week!

Book 6 Episode 29, "Birthday-Transfer-PDay Again" Edition (6/29/15)

Area: Sicuani   Comp: Cedeno

Hello everyone!

-HAPPY BIRTHDAY (yesterday) to Lincoln! He's growing up so fast. I remember back when he still had braces!

-Transfers! I'm going to Sicuani, which is just outside Cusco. It's much more green than here, but it's still on the cold half of the mission. I'm excited though! My new companion's name is Elder CedeƱo. It's not the same one that was here with me in Yunguyo, it's a different one from Elder Hogan's group. Exciting though!

-Today there's a holiday in Peru where they celebrate some idol, which means there's no school or work today. Obviously they spent all day yesterday drinking, which made yesterday super successful.

-President Uchtdorf had a fireside with all the members and missionaries living within the mission on Monday! It was great. He and his wife were a little out of it because of the air, but it was still amazing. His advice to the mission was "Keep the commandments and trust the Lord."

Not much else happened! But don't worry--Next week I'll have LOTS of things to say! Have a great week!

Sincerely,
Elder Steele

Song 6, Estrofa 22, "Post-Father's Day Temple Dedicaton Pre-Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Joseph Smith Lincoln's Birthday Transfer P-Day" Edition (6/22/15)

Area: Yunguyo  Comp: Hogan

Hello everybody!

-HAPPY FATHER'S DAY Dad! I hope it was fantastic! Assuming that 'fantastic' means a very long car drive.

-We had a temple dedication yesterday! It was the temple of Trujillo, Peru, and President Uchtdorf and Elder Bednar came to dedicate it. It was fantastic. Also I immensely miss temples.

-We saw the temple dedication in Juli, along with the Cultural Celebration the night before and a fireside by President Uchtdorf in Cusco tonight. That means that we decided on Saturday to just go to Juli and stay for 3 nights, along with the rest of the zone. Zone sleepover!

-"I remember also to have heard my father prophesy unto the people concerning the coming of one Jesus Christ, a Son of God, to atone for the sins of the world."-Alma 36:17
"Behold, it came to pass that I, Enos, knowing my father that he was a just man-- and blessed be the name of my God for it-- Behold, I went to hunt beasts in the forests; and the words which I had often heard my father speak...sunk deep into my heart." Enos 1:1,3
Those are 2 of the prophets of the Book of Mormon who mention how important their fathers were for their conversion. Fathers have the vital role of presiding the family and protecting them physically and spritually. Thanks for always sharing your testimony Dad!

-We had a service project which was just setting up new computers for a lady in our ward. She specifically asked me because I'm "kind of nerdy" (although it's really not that hard).

Anyways, it's been a good week! Have a good time! Don't get sick!

Sincerely,
Elder Steele

Week 6 Day 15, "The Pre-Father's Day One" (6/15/15)

Area: Yunguyo    Comp: Hogan

Dearest Everyone,

-I acknowledge that Father's Day is this coming Sunday, but I'm going to send my 'Father's Day' email next week. Stay tuned! I'll let you know what Elder Hogan buys me!

-Elder Hogan went to Lima this past week to do his papers! It took him an extra 4 hours to get to Cusco because there was another riot in Juliaca, but besides that all was pretty normal. I was in a trio with the two Latinos in my sector, and I'm proud to say that I can still speak Spanish!

-We talked for an hour about the 10 commandments, which is something that only happens in trios.

-I conducted sacrament meeting and gave the longest talk yesterday, but yet again I was saved by the other elders who spoke much longer than they had to before I spoke. Success!

-There's a temple dedication this week! Which means no church on Father's Day, just the temple dedication, which is awesome. Also a member of the First Presidency is going to dedicate the temple, and after go to Cusco to talk to all the people living inside the mission. Score!

Anyways, there's not much to report. Things are going well! Have a great week!

Sincerely,
Elder Steele

Weekly Email, version 6.8.2015, "The Birthday Candle Mystery Solved" Edition 6.8.15

Area: Yunguyo   Comp: Hogan

Hello everyone!

-We had interviews with President this past week! They've changed the interviews where they come to the rooms now. Among Hermana Harbertson's comments are 'really small' and 'very orange', which I think means we have one of the best rooms.

-We had a meeting in Juli yesterday for the Branch Presidents and missionaries. Juli's an hour away, and after we got there (on time) we started the meeting 2 1/2 hours late. Fantastic!

-It takes 16 minutes and 40 seconds to burn a birthday candle completely. Mystery solved!

-Elder Monson (our Zone Leader) went with Elder Hogan and I on splits while his companion went with Elder Castillo and Elder Flores. We spent the whole time knocking on doors, and ended up teaching a 95 year old woman that I would have guessed was 60.

-We ate tacos! I ate them right before I started my fast, but I ate so many that I actually was so full it hurt for nearly the whole 24 hours of the fast. Worth it though!

-D&C 101:16 "Be still and know that I am God". Just something to remember.

Anyways, things are going well here! Have a great week!

Sincerely,
Elder Steele

Row 6 Spot 1 6.1.15

Area: Yunguyo  Comp: Hogan

Dear Everybody,

-I just have to start with Elder L Tom Perry. He was the greatest, and will be missed. In his last talk he talks about the family, and to close he talks about how, the older he gets, the more he realizes the most important thing in the world is the family.

-We had our first successful activity in Yunguyo yesterday! Which I thought was weird, since the idea was terrible and we didn't really invite anyone. But we made empanadas and had a big turnout, so success!

-The Branch President's son got back from his mission this week. There's a tradition here where the whole branch goes to meet the family as they get off the combi, then we go to the family's house and there's cake, which means that obviously we went.

-We got doors slammed in our face for Elder Hogan's first time! He's finally getting the experience!

-We played soccer as a zone last week, despite my complaints. I did end up playing though, and I scored 3 goals. Maybe this soccer thing isn't all that bad.

-There was a teacher strike this week, which only meant no school all week. That turned out fantastic for us, since all the families were home, together, all day every day.

Anyways, things are going well here! We're learning a lot. We have people to teach now. Be awesome people!

Sincerely,
Elder Steele
